Well, my mother asked me if I thought the show would be back for a season 3 since the show had turned into one drama filled mess. I told her if the ratings were good, hot mess or no, Real Housewives would definitely be back for a season 3:

New York (CNS) – Bravo’s season two of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” reaches the top of the highest rated series in the “Real Housewives” franchise as it gains an increase of 116% since its first season. The show had 2,047,000 adults 18-49 and 2,977,000 total viewers, up 22 percent (vs. 1,680,000), and 35 percent (vs. 2,212,000) respectively versus the season one finale.

Not only has the Atlanta housewives TV show beaten out competition from its “Real Housewives” sister shows, it also helped Bravo get the number one spot amongst cable networks in the sought after adult 18-49 demographic and among women 18-49 during the hour starting at 10pm.

The ratings of season two averages at 1,992,000 adults 18-49 with a total of 2,836,000 viewers overall, which was a triple digit increase in all key demographics versus season one. However, it wasn’t until this week’s episode of “Million Dollar Listing” that the ratings really started to soar against the season one averages.

At the end of the day, Bravo is about that money, not about social commentary or not about making black folk look like upstanding citizens. If folk want to coon or be a buffoon for the cameras and Bravo wants to profit from it then so be it.

I will say this however, black folk often complain about how we’re portrayed in the media, yet we regularly watch shows like Real Housewives of Atlanta, given them stellar ratings and guaranteeing they will continue to be on the air. There’s a certain level of hypocrisy in that.

And before anyone asks, I don’t watch the show. I watched the some of the first season, but couldn’t continue to watch the coonery on display. Just like I didn’t watch “Flavor of Love” or “I Love New York”, I just don’t suffer coonfests well and refuse to aid in any station making dollars off of some of the worst images of black folk around…you can also add Tyler Perry’s “house of Payne” to my list of don’t watch.

My point is if Real housewives of Atlanta was on BET there would be an uproar and calls for a boycott of BET…again, but put it on a predominantly white station and not only do we watch, but there are very little complaints and no calls for boycotting of the station. Just lots of blogs talking about the foolishness NeNe Leaks or Sheree Whitfield or Kim Zolciak pulled that week. Seems like black folk should spend less time complaining and more time practicing what they preach or complain about.

But that would be too much like right, and thanks to the increases in ratings we are guaranteed to have another season of Real Housewives of Atlanta, with all it’s coonery on display.

Good points made in the article. I think that NOT watching the show is all you need to do. There are plenty of silly ass white folks on tv, so I cant get too sensitive about black folks acting a fool on tv. Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously, and sometimes laughably we act as if our ’secrets’ are being exposed somehow (note: the Chris Rock ‘Good Hair’ crticism, Bill Cosby commentary critics, etc). I dont watch the show, but I dont care that others do. Thankfully the most visible black man and women on tv are both educated, well spoken, attractive, and always dressed appropriately(Mr. & Mrs. Barack Obama). The most famous black man in the world doesn’t wear a jersey, doesn’t wear his jeans down to his knees, doesnt use offensive language nor does he coon around, but instead wears a suit everyday. We are ok on middle class and high end, now if we can only get the whole parenting / respect for education thing down pat. The low ends of everybodys society always has some who choose to climb out, some who choose to remain down, and others who celebrate it. I’m done caring.
