LilWayneThe critically acclaimed Lil Wayne documentary The Carter will be come to a movie theatre video store near you:

After stirring up both critical reviews and a lawsuit over the past year, Lil Wayne documentary The Carter is going to straight to DVD, its public release occurring next week.

Its Sundance premiere in January inspired Variety to call it the “Don’t Look Back of rap,” a reference to D.A. Pennebaker’s take on a 1965 Bob Dylan tour. Director Adam Bhala Lough and Quincy Jones III-run distributor QD3 Entertainment boasted of the film’s revealing nature, as it magnifies the rapper’s use of pot and cough syrup during his trek through the United States and Amsterdam.

There was a lawsuit associated with the case when Lil Wayne and his management team sued over the version of The Carter that was shown at Sundance. Wayne said he didn’t approve of some of the footage that was shown, as the producers/director promised him final say over the doc. He tried to stop distribution of the project though a judge later threw out the case and refused to stop The Carter from being released.

Hmm…I guess all that footage showing him pouring cough syrup into his soda and anything else he was drinking was problematic for him. Not to mention the enormous consumption of weed he’s seen inhaling at every possible turn.

Celebrities need to remember when allow a camera in on your life they are going to catch everything. And I do mean everything. Lil Wayne knows his way of living is sketch…he should have made sure his “final say” was in writing and also limited the access the cameras had to his life.

With that said The Carter documentary definitely looks promising. Whether you think Wayne is rap genius or hr garbage he has made a permanent impression on hip hop and this very raw and uncensored look at his life on the road is beyond fascinating. The voyeur in me doesn’t think I can pass it up.
